[00:00:06] Speaker A: Welcome to the day today. We're maybe a little late to the Premier League party this week, and it's definitely got nothing to do with being able to link everything into Halloween. Although arguably, there's nothing more frightening for Manchester United than Pep Guardiola knocking on the Old Trafford door, going wing. Trick or treat. Our talking point this week is looking back over the Manchester Derby. And joining me for the first part of this week's episode is Opta analyst, star writer Ryan Benson. Ryan, you well? [00:00:37] Speaker B: Yeah, well, very well. You just said star writer. That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me. And on Halloween as well. Or maybe that's the trick. [00:00:47] Speaker A: That's the trick. No, the treat is you joining us for this one because you were working for us on the site on Sunday, possibly with your hands over your eyes. We won't talk about that too much. But it is quite staggering the hold that City have over United and pretty much since Pep has come into power at City. There's some great articles on the site at the moment, well worth diving into these, but City have amassed 145 more points than United during Pep's reign. And dare I say it, it really felt like those 145 points were on show in the Derby on Sunday. [00:01:26] Speaker B: Yeah, it was an extremely one sided event. I mean, I think one stat that stood out to me was the fact that City managed to amass four expected goals against United. And so that was the first time that United had conceded four or more expected goals in a Premier League game since 2017. 1st time at home since 2014 in the Premier League. And obviously, you can look at City's chances in those, and the goals that they scored were generally the chances you would expect them to score. But I think it helped to illustrate how much more effective City are, particularly in the final third, than United. Just looked toothless, completely devoid of ideas. And yeah, now, obviously with sort of just continuing Guardiola's outrageous record against United. So I think that's now 39 different managers managed five or more Premier League games at Old Trafford, away at Old Trafford, and Guardiola is the only one to have a win ratio of over 50%, and his is so 62.5%, and that's from eight matches there. And it doesn't look like there's any sign of that record getting worse at all, really, anytime soon. It just looks like City are so good, they've got this stranglehold on United, and it doesn't look like it's going to be kind of relinquishing anytime soon. [00:03:20] Speaker A: Now, at least one of those weird ones as well is it like there are managers who do have good records at Old Trafford? There are managers who have gone there over the time and picked out Plucky one nil, two one victories and such like, but he's one of only three managers who has in their team score four or more goals against United in a single match more than once in the Premier League. The other two klopp and amazingly, Kevin Keegan. But you actually think about back to Let Era, there were those high scoring as you say, it's not just the case that City are dominating United, it's the manner in which they're dominating them as well. And I think some that can be best shown by you and Ali Tweedo were working on the game for us. And on the site there is a look back at the Derby from the perspective of both sides. And I thought it was brilliant how you put together the Manchester United perspective and looking at that battle between Rasmuss Hoyland and erling, Harland. Up top for City, obviously, Harland stealing all the headlines. Two goals cake. And there is some argument. One of it's from a very soft, ish penalty call, but at the end of the day, you've still got to finish them. And them being given basically the freedom of Manchester, I feel to score the second in that one. But Hoyland, it's weird on the eye, you thought, Hang on here. He's not really got much service in this game, he's not really seeing a lot of the ball. But it was quite interesting when you ran the touch matches afterwards and actually find Hoyland had more touches than Harland in the game. [00:04:42] Speaker B: Yeah. So I was careful throughout the piece to keep making the point that no one is expecting Hoyland to be putting up Harland's numbers, no one expected him to kind of enjoy starts this season like Harland did last season or anything. So I don't know if this is just know they're Scandies with similar sounding surnames or something, but their performances, it just felt quite illustrative of the two clubs in general, like seeing them on the pitch for the first time in the Premier League. You mentioned the touches and so Hoyland had 24 and none were shots, whereas Harland only had 22. And obviously that was for a team that had 60% of the ball and six of his touches were either a shot, obviously, two of which were a goal, and then it was an assist as well. You have to kind of obviously look at them both in the context of their own teams, but whereas Harland is clearly obsessed with being that threat in the box, first and foremost, Hoyland isn't really playing that way. And again, you have to acknowledge that playing against City, obviously, probably the best team in the world, is an extreme example. But Hoyland is sort of averaging. [00:06:11] Speaker A: Two. [00:06:11] Speaker B: Goals, he wishes two shots for 90 minutes at the moment this season, which is half of the kind of the output that Harland is putting up. And again, you do have to wonder about how Hoyland is being used. United don't really look like they know how to get the best out of him and this is probably partly because he is quite a well rounded player. You'll see him and this was at the same at the weekend. He's both effective at holding the ball up, but also running in behind. But it's starting to make his sort of role look a little bit muddled, isn't in the sense that trying to do a lot of both of those, whereas maybe if you were looking at Harland, there's far more of an emphasis on actually just being that predator in the box. Again, I have to keep going back to saying no one's expecting Hoyland to be exactly like Harland or anything like yeah. Them both being on the pitch at the same time made it yeah, it was just interesting to watch kind of two strikers. It was sort of polar opposites at the moment in terms of their form and everything. And yeah, it's quite easy to feel sorry for Hoyland because at the same time I don't think he's doing anything particularly wrong. And him being a different player to Harland, again, there's nothing wrong with that. But he's clearly working hard and you can clearly see that there's ability. But for whatever reason, Ten Hag isn't finding out isn't finding the best way to get finding the way to kind of get the best out of him. And then that's not being helped by the sort of the lack of creativity that's coming from United, from the supporting cast, if you like. For example, if you look at the players who've got assists for United this season, granted, this doesn't necessarily mean everything, but Fernandez is the only one with more than one in the Premier League. He's got two. And the other players with one are harry maguire, johnny evans, lisandro martinez, aaron wambisaka, victor lindelof, erickson and marcus Rashford. [00:08:36] Speaker A: Those are the only emerging there. There was a theme emerging there very quick. Yeah. [00:08:41] Speaker B: And even then with Ericsson and Rashford at the end there, they've only got one each. And then you kind of you look at the players who haven't contributed anything in that respect, like Sancho Anthony, Mount Garnacco, Martial Hoyland himself, Diego Dallo. They're all players that would be considered attacking players, forward minded players. Again, it's not just assists. That doesn't just mean maybe they're not necessarily providing any creativity, but it's an interesting point that all these players are failing to kind of have that kind of tangible output at the moment. And that's got to be part of the reason why Hoyland is suffering at the. [00:09:35] Speaker A: To. We don't want to dive too much into the tactical side of united at the moment, but the halftime switch who knows if amrabat Hatchie was carrying an injury or if it was a complete tactical move or whatever, but in the first half, scott McTominay, dare I say it looked like one of united's better threats, was getting on the ball. United make a decision to switch him back into that central defensive midfield role. We've got a great piece on the site diving into source. What is he, how does he fit into this United side? And I think that's the prime example you bring Mount on. And look, I think there's a lot of high hopes that Mason Mount will get there. But right now, as you say, you've got a system where you've got a lot of players who are all fighting over the same sort of spot. And as a result, he's trying to put the ingredients together. And it's maybe not making the best of what they've got at the moment, but that's part of the challenge of United and as you say, City, is that anomaly. City is that team right now that are so far up there. Coming into the game. There were three straight victories. Yeah, a little bit of papering over the cracks, come and play a top team, see what happens. But I think, yeah, there's a lot to look forward to. Holly and you talked about his running in behind. He did have a great chance to nearly put United back in that game and another day he finishes that one and we're all. [00:10:55] Speaker B: He'S he's looked like there's a lot of ability that you could maybe argue that even if Harland was playing in this United team at the moment, would he be doing any better? It's an impossible question. I appreciate it. [00:11:15] Speaker A: I'm sure somewhere there's some data. [00:11:19] Speaker B: Yeah, I think it's still kind of a point that United are just struggling in a creative sense at the moment. And, yeah, just going back to the kind of what you're saying about the midfield and the substitution at halftime against City, again, taking Amrabat out of the equation isn't necessarily going to impact them directly in terms of their creativity or what they were. McTominay was he had kind of the only two real chances for United in that first half. And it was his sort of aggressive forward running that was actually making them a bit of a threat and taking that out of the equation and dropping him really deep into a role that I think most people would accept that he isn't a defensive midfielder. It kind of completely discombobulated the United midfield even maybe even more than it already was. And then, yeah, Mount obviously pretty much coming back off an injury, just couldn't get into the game at all. And it feels a bit of a shame. I think Mount started off like he was struggling to make any influence on games. Then he had a couple of games where he actually looked quite lively. I thought he was quite good. And then he got injured again and then he's thrown back in at halftime against City and into a midfield that is playing the best team in the world. Into a midfield that has McTominay as the kind of the protection in front of the defense. And you could see with certainly the Harland header, both of Harland's headers like the one that onana Saved and the one he scored. You could see in the build up to both of those kind of the issue in the midfield and who was picking up runners and it was all a bit of a mess. So, yeah, there are some causes for optimism in some areas if you really, really go looking, but yeah, Sunday was, it was just another fairly grim reminder of how far behind Man United are, particularly from City, but I would say most of the top teams in the Premier League at the moment. [00:13:50] Speaker A: Indeed. Well, thanks Ryan, that was a fascinating deep dive into the Manchester Derby. We're going to take a quick break here on The Day today. When we're back, Matt furnest will be joining us and we'll be looking at some of those other top teams in the Premier League. We'll be back after this Breaka's. Thank you very much. Please do leave a rating and review. It really does help us with our algorithm. Right, usually the second part of the show we go into the good, the bad and the quirky from the weekend's action. Because we are a little bit delayed. Matt's had a little bit more time to crunch some numbers, as they call it, in the business. And as a result on this Halloween, he's been diving into his box of treats for us and he's going to give us the best facts from each game in the Premier League this weekend. [00:15:54] Speaker C: I wish I'd made them Halloween related facts. [00:15:57] Speaker A: I think we used up all our puns in the first part of the episode, so you'll be glad to hear on that. [00:16:02] Speaker C: Glad I missed that. [00:16:04] Speaker A: I think the audience are as well. But anyway, we'll move on. [00:16:08] Speaker C: Yeah, we've obviously got ten games. Sometimes we get accused of not covering every game, not covering every team. So this week I thought we'd mix it up a little bit and we'd have a fact from every game this week. I'm going to start off in the Friday night game between palace and spurs, which obviously spurs prevailed two one. That win means that spurs have now taken 26 points this season from a possible 30 under Ange Poster Coglu, and that is the most by a manager in their first ten games in the competition. So no manager had ever won 26 points in their first ten games. He's made the best staff, any coach, and it beats a record by a certain manager. Can either of you guess who that was? I don't think you will get it. Someone won 25 points in their first ten games as a Premier League manager. I'll give you one guess. [00:16:59] Speaker B: I think it probably read the first hitting. [00:17:02] Speaker A: It was good hitting. [00:17:03] Speaker C: Yeah. And he wasn't even a real manager, he was an interim coach. [00:17:10] Speaker A: Do we count interim managers? [00:17:11] Speaker C: If you don't, then Carlo Antolocci won 24 and you'll never get this. [00:17:17] Speaker A: Frank Clark. [00:17:18] Speaker C: Frank Clark Forest won 24 in his first ten games as well. So that was the Friday night game. [00:17:23] Speaker A: Obviously. [00:17:24] Speaker C: Spurs went top of the league and remained there. They held, I think, a five point lead after winning on Friday. And then we move on to the early Saturday game, the London Derby, between Chelsea and Brentford. We thought Chelsea were entering a new phase where they were actually going to win games, but no, after Succumbing. Well, they were two nil up against Arsenal in the last game and ended up drawing two all. And then they lost two nil this weekend to Brentford. That was their 8th Premier League home defeat of this calendar year. That's the most they've suffered in the calendar year since 1986, when they suffered ten. Obviously, there are still games to go this year. Chelsea could beat that record. Brentford obviously won their last season as well at Stanford Bridge. They've won twice this kind of year at Stanford Bridge. That's only one game fewer than Chelsea have managed this entire year in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge. So, yeah, not great for Chelsea fans. [00:18:27] Speaker A: More games. [00:18:28] Speaker C: On Saturday, we saw an Eddie and Kettier hat trick for Arsenal in their five nil win over Sheffield United. In doing so, he became the 22nd different hat trick scorer in the Premier League for Arsenal. They've had more unique hat trick goalscorers than any other team in the competition. And he was the first Arsenal player to score a Premier League hat trick since Pierre Emerick Obamiang against Leeds in February 2021. Interestingly. The first Englishman to do so since Theo Walcott against West Brom in May 2015. Both Aubameyang and Walcott, like and Ketia wear the number 14 shirt. Also, the player to score the most Premier League cat tricks for Arsenal was Tieri Henri, who also wore number 14. So there's something in that. If you're an Arsenal striker, wear number 14. [00:19:16] Speaker A: It's like the Manchester United number seven of the old days, isn't it? You just now need to make sure you're in the 14 for Arsenal and. [00:19:21] Speaker B: We'Re looking forward to the Mason Mount. [00:19:28] Speaker C: You're going to say Anthony better than that. [00:19:30] Speaker A: He struggles with the lustre of wearing the seven shirt. He's weighed down by it, let's say that. Whereas the 14 wet, he's not an Aston Villa kits. Come on. [00:19:41] Speaker C: There was a Premier League. It felt like more than a six pointer. I'm going to call it a Premier League nine pointer this weekend between Bournemouth and Burnley, because why not? Areola won his first game as a Premier League manager. That defeat for Burnley was their 8th in ten Premier League games this season. Only in the second tier, in 19 four five have they lost at least eight of their first ten games to begin a league campaign. It was also worryingly the third time this season they've lost a game after scoring the opening goal, something Burnley will need to correct, because they are now in the relegation zone. After Bournemouth's win, we'll move on to the late game on Saturday. Wolves two, Newcastle two, which saw Callum Wilson score a brace. He scored 16 of his 17 Premier League penalties. Now, that's a 94% success rate. The only player of 100% success rate which Wilson will never replicate to have taken ten or more is Yayo Tore. But of those players to have taken at least 15 in the competition, only Matt Latizier. Yes, he did miss a penalty in the Premier League with 96%. It's not a conspiracy. And Danny Murphy 95% have a better conversion rate from the spot. The good facts about Danny Murphy is the one penalty he did miss in the Premier League he scored the rebound from, so it was almost pointless saving it. Well done. [00:21:00] Speaker A: Yeah, Wilson. [00:21:01] Speaker C: There's more on Callum Wilson in our newsletter, which we released today about his minutes per goal ratio. One of the best ever in the Premier League. And since he joined Newcastle, only Erling Harland has a better minutes per goal ratio in the Premier League. Very spooky Sunday's games. We were treated to many games on Sunday. We'll start with the early game. West Ham lost at home to Everton. Dominic Cavaluan scoring the goal in that match. He became the fourth player to score 50 goals or reach 50 goals in the Premier League for Everton. Can either of you name the other three? [00:21:35] Speaker B: Yes, I can, because I did a Tweet for it during the game on Sunday. I'll let Belly take this one. [00:21:43] Speaker A: I mean, this is going to be interesting when we get into a little bit of the Pauline Quirk quiz this week, which has a little twist to it as well. You have to think about your most obvious of Everton players. So Tim Cahill? [00:21:57] Speaker C: Yes. 56 goals. [00:22:02] Speaker A: Oh, lukaku. Because he was there, lukakuki. [00:22:05] Speaker C: And there's someone between them hates Burglars. [00:22:12] Speaker A: Big dunk. Duncan Ferguson. [00:22:14] Speaker C: Duncan Ferguson. 60 goals. [00:22:15] Speaker A: So Calvin Lewin the quiz I'd win every week. [00:22:19] Speaker C: Calvin Lewin is a great player, but his fitness and injury woes aren't the best. So it might take him another, what, ten years probably, to reach 68 goals. Good win for Everton. [00:22:31] Speaker A: Yeah, really interesting. [00:22:33] Speaker C: Three teams down the bottom now that even with a 15 point deduction, they might still stay up. [00:22:38] Speaker A: It was also interesting, first away Premier League win without conceding a goal since August 2021. Imagine going to 41 consecutive league away games and, yeah, you've won games, but every time you've not kept a clean sheet. Incredible. [00:22:54] Speaker C: Rare feet. The other team in mersey. [00:22:57] Speaker A: Liverpool. [00:22:58] Speaker C: Another clever win. Still, I don't know if it's just me that feels like they're very much going under the radar, their title challenge of the season, but they are still my favorites to challenge City at the end of the season. It was a three nil win over Nottingham Forest and it marked well, Sunday marked exactly one year since Liverpool last lost a home game in the Premier League. That was against Leeds. And, yeah, since then, Liverpool have now won 14 of the 17 Premier League games at Anfield So, a fortress that will stand them in good stead this season. Three more games on Sunday. We'll start with Brighton. Fulham. Brighton's goal in their one all draw came from Evan Ferguson, who became the first teenager to score ten or more Premier League goals in a single season. Sorry, a single calendar year since Wayne Rooney in 2005. And so far this season, there's been 23 goals scored by teenagers in the Premier League. Again, I've mucked that up. So far this candor year, there have been 23 goals scored by teenagers in the Premier League and Brighton have accounted for 15 of those, which is 65%. So, yeah, the place to go if you're a young talent. [00:24:05] Speaker A: Can't wait to see them all at Chelsea next season. [00:24:09] Speaker C: Well, I'm sure they'll still finish 10th. Aston Villa beat my favorite team, Luton Town, three one at Villa Park, which was very upsetting to see. It was at Aston Villa's 20th win in the Premier League this candy year. In fact, only Man City have won more games this year. It also brings up Villa's most Premier League victories in a single year since winning 21 in 1998. We talked about a lot about Villa last week on the pod. Unai Emery obviously doing a fantastic job. He's now averaged 2.3 points per game in the Premier League in his 35th game. All eight previous managers to win at least two points per game. A club in the Premier League have won the Premier League at that side. So Aston Villa are going to win the Premier League under Unai Emery? Maybe not this season, but they will eventually. [00:25:02] Speaker A: Even though Liverpool are your favorites, to challenge City for the title. [00:25:05] Speaker C: Yeah, I reckon Villa will win it next year. [00:25:07] Speaker A: Got you. [00:25:07] Speaker B: Give it that. [00:25:08] Speaker C: And obviously you guys covered this game earlier on the Manchester Derby, which only one team turned up for Man United have now lost half of their games this season in the Premier League. That's their most defeats in the opening ten games of Leave campaign since 19 86 87, when they lost six. [00:25:26] Speaker A: Was that when Fergie came to power? [00:25:30] Speaker C: Like a dictator coming to power? Yeah. [00:25:34] Speaker A: Arguments, arguments to be made. [00:25:38] Speaker C: Yeah, I think that was I think. [00:25:40] Speaker A: That was Big Ron era, the end of Big Ron and the start of the Fergie time. Right, there you go. [00:25:47] Speaker C: Games wrapped up. [00:25:49] Speaker A: For once on the podcast, we have covered all ten Premier League games. It took us ten weeks to do it, it's the perfect ten, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. But those of you wondering, are we going to have a Pauline Quirk quiz? Well, of course we're going to have a Pauline Quirk quiz, but there is a difference. This week I'm taking charge. Basically, I've won one quiz in with the data here. This is always a dangerous moment. It's probably a one week special, but I had to look into this number and when I did it, it threw up some interesting questions. So it is related to Manchester City versus Manchester United. Erling, Harland's Brace against United now means that he has scored the same amount of goals as Swindon Town did during their time in the Premier League with 47. Now, Swindon are one of 31 teams to have played in the Premier League, but obviously they aren't this season because there's only 20 in it. So, for this week's Pauling Quirk quiz, I want you to name the top goal scorer in the Premier League for each of those 31 teams who have played in the Premier League but aren't this season. This will, of course, be in a penalty shootouts. Now, I'm going to make this a little bit easier for you. For example, if we were to include the current 20 Premier League teams in this list, you could say Harry Kane for spurs, you could say Sergio Aguero for Manchester City going elsewhere, you could say Colton Morris for Luton, you could say Brian Roy for Nottingham Forest and you could even say Brian Dean for Sheffield United. But it's the other 31 teams who have played in the Premier League and their respective top goalscorers in the competition that I am looking for, there's a couple of gimmies, okay? It's a couple of fairly obvious ones and that's why I'm secretly hoping we're going to get into sudden death penalties, because that's when it gets interesting. [00:27:49] Speaker C: I'm furiously typing some of my options here, thinking about what I could have. [00:27:54] Speaker A: This is going to be good. Right, we're going to give Matt and Ryan a little bit of a breather to come up with some names and we'll be back after this break. You heard about Opta Player ratings earlier. Well, they now power two free to play games, Optamax and Opta Five. Predict who you think will perform well in every Premier League fixture each week. Submit your picks and potentially win up to $70,000 throughout the season. It's that simple. Follow the link in the podcast description to be in with a chance of winning. Welcome back to the day today where it is pauline Quirk quiz. Time to remind you of the question. Erling, Harland's Brace against Manchester United means he has now scored the same amount of goals as Swindon Town did during their time in the Premier League with 47. Swindon are one of 31 clubs to have played in the Premier League but are not playing in the competition this season. I've asked Matt and Ryan to name one of those 31 clubs and their respective top goal scorer in the competition. This has been fun and you're going to hear some great names coming up and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what the answers come up with. It's great being on the other side of the table. I enjoy it. Usually we put the offer on the table for the guests of the podcast to go, whether they want to go first or want to go second. So, Ryan, you are the guest on the podcast. Matt has to sit in this uncomfortable chair. Now, do you want to go first or do you want to go second? A reminder, David decided to go second last week and lost the quiz. [00:29:43] Speaker B: Yeah, I'll go first. [00:29:46] Speaker A: Ryan is taking first step rightly on this one. Good luck. Pen to papers ready at the home. Let's see what the answers are coming up with. [00:29:55] Speaker B: Right. Okay. First up, Sunderland. Kevin Phillips. [00:30:01] Speaker A: Correct. Kevin Phillips at Sunderland. 61 goals for Sunderland Kevin Phillips. Ryan, that was one I was confident on. Have that one. [00:30:15] Speaker C: Right, so my first kick, I know this is correct, so I'm going up blindfolded back healing. It Troy dean for Watford. [00:30:23] Speaker A: Yeah, bit of a gimme there. Troy Deeney, 47 goals for Watford in the Premier League. Both of you converting. Your first spot kicks. Ryan. [00:30:35] Speaker B: Yeah, again, it's one I'm fairly confident of. But Southampton and Matt Leticier, the first. [00:30:43] Speaker A: Of the century makers. Matt Leticia is correct. 100 goals for Southampton in the Premier League. Matt. [00:30:54] Speaker C: I am going to go my second spot kick again, I'm fairly confident about this one. Leicester City. [00:31:00] Speaker A: Jamie Vardy, top of the charts when it comes to sides, not in the Premier League. Jamie Vardy, 136 goals for Leicester in the Premier League. He is there. The Foxes, fox in the box. The all time leading scorer for Leicester in the Premier League. Checking out Ryan. [00:31:20] Speaker B: Right, okay. Leeds United. Mark Viduca. [00:31:32] Speaker A: Is correct. Mark Beduka scored 59 goals for Leeds United, their all time leading scorer in the Premier League. And of the list. Of players that would be available for this one. The highest non British player. [00:31:48] Speaker C: I have a list of 14 potentials and Leeds and Marvin was not on that. [00:31:53] Speaker A: Good shout. Great shout. [00:31:55] Speaker C: My third kick, I am going to go with Portsmouth. [00:32:02] Speaker A: Yakubu, yakubu. Portsmouth is the right answer. 28 goals for Portsmouth, same amount as Pascal Gross has scored for Brighton, who is Brighton's all time leading scorer in the Premier League, having just overtaken Glenn Murray. Three. Three then. This is where I said it was going to get exciting as we close in on the potential for sudden death here. So, Ryan, spot kick, number four. [00:32:38] Speaker B: Yeah. Okay. Right, okay. I think Blackburn Rovers and Alan Shearer. [00:32:50] Speaker A: Going to put you out your misery. Absolutely right. Alan Shearer, 112 goals. [00:32:55] Speaker B: I wasn't sure about that one. [00:32:57] Speaker A: That was a very good shout. Remembering that Shearer obviously had those early years of scoring. Absolutely shed loads of goals. Well, 112 of them for Blackburn Rovers. A very good penalty at that time. Second highest on the list. So you've got no more players with. [00:33:10] Speaker C: Over 100 finger in the air. [00:33:14] Speaker A: No more players with over 100 left on this list. I'm running out of no failed conversions yet. [00:33:20] Speaker C: Matt, to equalize of the answers options I have, this is probably my best one, but even that, I'm not too sure about this one, but I'm going to go Ipswich Town and Marcus Stewart, purely because he had that one great season. [00:33:40] Speaker A: He did have one great season for Ipswich Town. There's a good chance we might be seeing Ipswich in the Premier League again next season. They will be chasing down Marcus Stewart's record of 25 goals for switchtown in the Premier League. Well converted there, Matt. We are perfect through eight. A miss now would be crucial. Ryan? [00:34:08] Speaker B: I'm going to keep things in East Anglia. Go with my hometown club, Norwich City. And Chris Sutton. [00:34:19] Speaker A: So, Timu Pookie had a great couple of seasons for Norwich City in the Premier League, but they were not as good as Chris Sutton's. 33 goals for Norwich City. A correct finish with his fifth spot kick. Good thinking to go back to the early eras. [00:34:36] Speaker C: How many did Efan, a cuckoo get? [00:34:38] Speaker A: He's just a little bit behind memory. I had EF and a cuckoo for. [00:34:42] Speaker C: Norwich as my options. I'm glad you picked Norwich. [00:34:45] Speaker B: Yeah. I also have him down for Norwich. And I wasn't sure it was going to be a toss up between the two. [00:34:51] Speaker A: Again, you have to remember those first what was he? Two seasons he was at Norwich in the Premier League, he scored 33 goals and was their driving force behind their success. But yes, Chris Sutton. Matt, you need this. [00:35:08] Speaker C: Right, so I'm going to go with a team associated with failure reading and I think Kevin Doyle. [00:35:19] Speaker A: Yes, this could be. Who else could it be? [00:35:23] Speaker C: The other options I had were Dave Kitson, Shane Long, someone like Noel Hunt. [00:35:30] Speaker B: The great Leroy Lita. [00:35:31] Speaker A: Leroy Lita. Don't forget about Leroy Lita. [00:35:35] Speaker C: Outscored them all. I think that he had one or two great seasons, but it's whether or not he moved. But I'm gambling with Kevin Doyle. I have 1234-5678 options here and I've gone with Redding. [00:35:49] Speaker A: You've gone with Redding. It's a good choice because Kevin Doyle is indeed Redding's top goalscorer in the Premier League. 19 goals Kevin Doyle scored in his two years. When Reading were first in the Premier League, he'd obviously moved on towards 19. Timcott team not the lowest on this list. There we go. Right, I've got a few teams I. [00:36:14] Speaker C: Think might be in the lowest. [00:36:16] Speaker A: Ladies and gentlemen, we are now into sudden death. This is where the fun begins. This is where we wanted to get to. We have got here. Ryan, your first sudden death shot, please. [00:36:38] Speaker B: So all of my names on my list are well, all but one are. This feels quite risky now, so I'll go with Swansea City and Gulfy sigurdson. [00:37:05] Speaker A: Guilfy sigurdson as, Swansea City. [00:37:08] Speaker C: See, I would have gone. Danny Graham. [00:37:11] Speaker A: You would have gone. Danny Graham's. Right. If you had gone with Danny Graham, you wouldn't have been right. We're forgetting about Mishu here. Mishu scored lots of goals. [00:37:26] Speaker B: He had one season, though, didn't he? The other one I was thinking of was Wilfred Boney. [00:37:31] Speaker A: But Wilfred Boney as well. [00:37:34] Speaker B: I think Sigurton was there for a bit longer. I think. [00:37:42] Speaker A: It'S a goal. Guilfy Sigaton is the right answer. There 34 goals for Swansea City in the Premier League. Well done, Ryan. Good spot kick. We're working through the name. We've got eleven names of this 31 name list. There's 20 to choose from here. Matt, as you go into your Southern Death Shootout, a big risk. A big risk. [00:38:07] Speaker C: But for some reason, I think this is right. Blackpool I'm going to go for, and I think it is Gary Taylor Fletcher. [00:38:17] Speaker A: Blackpool. Gary taylor Fletcher. [00:38:21] Speaker C: I remember looking at this in the past and finding it quite funny that Gary Taylor Fletcher was a top scorer, but it might have been at a. [00:38:28] Speaker B: Certain point, so I might be wrong. [00:38:30] Speaker A: Blackpool's history in the Premier League, not many goals. Their top goal scorer scored 13. But that man was DJ Campbell. He scored 13 goals of LATP. [00:38:45] Speaker C: Can I get a rewind? [00:38:50] Speaker A: I'm just trying to gary Taylor. I've got Ian Taylor. Let's go through the list. Matthew Taylor. Matthew taylor. Stephen taylor. Ryan taylor. Gary taylor Fletcher. Only scored six goals for Blackpool in the Premier League. [00:39:03] Speaker C: Must have been goal involvements or something. Can I give you some other names? [00:39:10] Speaker A: Yeah, let's go through other names. [00:39:13] Speaker C: So I had four other clubs. [00:39:15] Speaker A: Go on. [00:39:16] Speaker C: Swindon. Craig Maskell. [00:39:19] Speaker A: No. [00:39:20] Speaker C: Okay. Oldham. The mullet man. Ian Marshall. [00:39:24] Speaker A: Nope. [00:39:25] Speaker C: Wimbledon. [00:39:26] Speaker A: Robbie Earl. Nope. [00:39:28] Speaker B: Okay. [00:39:29] Speaker C: And this was the biggest curveball in my head. [00:39:32] Speaker A: It was. Right. [00:39:33] Speaker C: Barnsley. Georgie Histor. [00:39:36] Speaker A: No. So was it John Hendry? No, it wasn't. Even John Hendry. Ryan, I would have knocked. [00:39:42] Speaker C: Whatever, then. [00:39:42] Speaker A: Have you got any other names on your list, Ryan? [00:39:44] Speaker B: Like I said, the last one I had, if I needed another one, the one I was going to go with, and I think this probably would have been wrong, but was going to be Giannino at Middlesborough. [00:40:02] Speaker A: Surprisingly, no. So I'm going to give you the teams, let everybody play along at home here. I'm going to give you the team, see if you can get the players. So we obviously had Jamie Vardy at Leicester. We had Alan Shearer at Blackburn. We had Leticia at Southampton. Next on the list, he scored 68 goals for Bolton Wanderers. [00:40:26] Speaker B: Bolton, who were they? 68 for Bolton? [00:40:35] Speaker C: My mind is blank there. Kevin Davies. [00:40:39] Speaker A: Correct. Kevin Davies. 68 goals for Bolton. Same as Wilfred Saha scored for Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Next on your list, Coventry City, 61 goals. [00:40:52] Speaker C: Dion Dublin. [00:40:53] Speaker A: Dion Dublin is correct. Up the stairs, up the stairs to the bedrooms. Same amount of goals as Kevin Phillips scored for Sunderland, 61. One goal behind was Queens Park Rangers, all time top goal scorer in the Premier League. Think back to the early eras. Ferdinand Les Ferdinand, 60 for them. Wimbledon was up next. I gave Wimbledon's up next with 58 goals for Wimbledon. Again. Was it someone like early era? [00:41:27] Speaker B: No, I don't know. [00:41:30] Speaker A: Marcus Gale, you're in the right era here. You are so close to nudging this one over the line. [00:41:37] Speaker B: Dean Holdsworth. [00:41:38] Speaker A: Dean Holdsworth is the right answer. 58 goals. Do you want to keep rolling through these? This is great. Shepherd Wednesday, 48 goals. David Hearst. No, his strike partner, though. His strike partner moved to Charlton from Sheffield Wednesday. [00:42:07] Speaker C: Mark Bright. [00:42:08] Speaker A: Mark bright 48 goals there. This is one that I thought would be a little bit of a gimme. Stoke City, 45 goals. [00:42:18] Speaker C: So I had them on my list and I didn't say it, but Kenwin. [00:42:21] Speaker A: Jones, you had the team, but you didn't have the team. Many of them many of them probably not scored with his head, even though they should have been scored. Who did you go for, Ryan? [00:42:38] Speaker B: Peter Crouch. [00:42:40] Speaker A: Peter Crouch, 45 goals for Stoke City. You got guilty Sigaton with 35. Charlton Athletic is 34 alongside Guilfy. Charlton Athletic, this one's probably one of the tougher ones of the day. Sean Bartlett. [00:42:58] Speaker B: No, I think it's Jason Yule, isn't it? [00:43:00] Speaker A: Jason Yule is the right answer there. 34 goals for Charlton. Okay, next up, Derby County, 32 goals again, they all came in about two seasons. [00:43:13] Speaker C: I had this one as Paolo. One chop. [00:43:16] Speaker A: Not Paolo. One chop. But you are Christine. You got it's. The third striker of that team you're looking for. [00:43:26] Speaker C: Dean Sturridge. [00:43:28] Speaker A: Dean Sturridge is the right answer. 32. There's a whole bunch. We're moving into the bunches of them here now. [00:43:34] Speaker C: In my head, it's like Rain Man, like a scene from Rain Man. I'm looking back through old Premier League sticker albums. [00:43:40] Speaker A: I'm trying to think. [00:43:43] Speaker C: When you said Sheffield Wednesday, my head was just screaming, Jill's the Builder. And I knew it was. [00:43:51] Speaker A: Middlesbrough then. 31 goals. [00:43:56] Speaker C: Um. [00:44:00] Speaker B: Hasselbank. [00:44:02] Speaker A: Not Hassleback. [00:44:03] Speaker B: Oh, is it not? [00:44:04] Speaker A: Not Hassle. [00:44:05] Speaker B: Could that be Malcolm? [00:44:06] Speaker C: No, Malcolm Christie was too injured there. [00:44:11] Speaker B: Was it Yakubu? [00:44:13] Speaker A: He was there was not Yakubu. [00:44:18] Speaker C: Ravinelli wouldn't have got he was only there for a season. Mikhail Beck. [00:44:25] Speaker A: Not Mikhail Beck. [00:44:27] Speaker C: I don't know. I couldn't get that. [00:44:29] Speaker A: Ravenelli was 16 goals, just to let you know. Brian Dean was 18 for them. Stuart Downing was 18 for them. Jimmy Floyd, Hasselbank was 22. [00:44:39] Speaker B: How many season, everyone? [00:44:43] Speaker A: Janinio Yakubu was 25. Duke is 26. Janino is 29. He's two off. [00:44:50] Speaker B: All right, two off. [00:44:53] Speaker A: Hamilton Ricard, Rickard. Yeah, the forgettable Hamilton Ricard, apparently. West Broma Jalbian, 30 goals. [00:45:04] Speaker C: Peter odom wingy. [00:45:05] Speaker A: Peter odom wingy. When he was not in cars trying to get moves, he was scoring 30 goals for West Brom. This is maybe my favorite one of the list. It's 29 goals and the club is Birmingham City. [00:45:21] Speaker B: It's got to be Mikhail forCell. [00:45:22] Speaker A: Mikhail forCell. 29 goals. Great memory there for that one. Right. Got jumped down the list a little bit to Wigan Athletic. 24 goals. [00:45:33] Speaker B: Hugo Roddy. Jaeger Bomb. [00:45:34] Speaker A: Hugo roddyger bomb. This is where we're talking now. [00:45:40] Speaker C: We thought it could have been Jason. [00:45:41] Speaker A: Roberts if only fired once into promotion once. Right, then, we're getting down into the low numbers here. So, Oldham Athletic, you've gone for Ian Marshall. That would not was also not the man. This is a belter, because I don't think even I would have got this if you'd put a picture of him in front of me. He scored the same number of Premier League goals as the likes of Christopher Samba for Blackburn, charlie Austin for Southampton, Ravenelli up at Middlesbrough, danny Welbeck for Arsenal. Chris Mark Williams at Sheffield Wednesday also scored 16 goals. This man, Graham Sharp. I don't think anybody would have no, we don't think anybody would have got that one. Blackpool was obviously DJ Campbell, as we well known. Right, then. Bradford City also scored 13 goals in the Premier League. [00:46:39] Speaker C: Dean Saunders. [00:46:40] Speaker A: You're so close. [00:46:42] Speaker B: Dean borders. [00:46:51] Speaker C: Played for Birmingham, for Bradford. Bradford. Collin moore. [00:46:56] Speaker A: No, he's probably better known for goals being scored for a different Yorkshire club. [00:47:07] Speaker B: Dean I was going to say Robbie. [00:47:09] Speaker C: Blake, but Lancashire, he played for Burnley. [00:47:12] Speaker A: Don't cause a fight on the podcast. Dean windas 13 goals. [00:47:16] Speaker B: Jesus. [00:47:19] Speaker A: Whole city. Then the team we were talking about just a second ago, where Dean Wendell scored more famous. [00:47:23] Speaker C: Giovanni. [00:47:24] Speaker A: Not Giovanni. Twelve goals for Hole, by the way. This one. Giovanni is one off at eleven. Just so they know. Giovanni scored eleven, but this guy scored twelve. Daniel Cuzan. Not Daniel Kuzak. [00:47:41] Speaker B: Someone we've already spoken about today. [00:47:44] Speaker A: It is not someone we've already spoken about today. [00:47:47] Speaker C: Nick Barnby. [00:47:48] Speaker A: It is not Nick Barbie, although it is close on the first name. Nikkia Yellowvich. Now, this one I'm surprised you didn't get because I kept saying Swindon Town, and I repeatedly said Swindon Town a few times. So there was one team with the 31 that you would have known. Swindon Town's. All time leading goalscorer in the Premier League. Jan Aga. Yotov Yotov. [00:48:20] Speaker C: Craig Maskell was my guess. How many did he get? [00:48:23] Speaker A: Craig maskell. Let's load up. Craig Maskell, I don't craig Maskell scored three. Same as Tommy Woodrington for Southampton. Same as John Collins for Everton. That's a belter. Okay, we have three teams left. We have Barnsley, Huddersfield town and Cardiff city if any of you got these ones right at home, you have a standing ovation for me. I would probably just destroy part of my studio here. I would probably not have got any of these three. Right. Barnsley. [00:48:52] Speaker C: No player got more than three goals for Cardiff. [00:48:55] Speaker A: Who did you say? [00:48:57] Speaker C: No player got more than three goals for Cardiff? [00:48:58] Speaker A: No, these three. So Bradford Barnsley scored, their top scorer scored ten, huddersfield Town's top scorer scored nine, and Cardiff City's top scorer scored seven. And I can't believe that Cardiff one is as low as that. [00:49:12] Speaker C: The Huddersfield guy came from Liga. [00:49:15] Speaker B: Steve Munier. [00:49:17] Speaker A: Steve Moonier. Correct. With his nine there. [00:49:21] Speaker B: Banging them in for breast at the moment, I believe. [00:49:23] Speaker A: Oh, there you go. Far more knowledge than I've got. Your next Barnsley. I thought this was there'll be a certain misty eyed remembrance of this guy. Dicky Bird just popped up and put the finger up. Relegated so many times in his career about Cardiff, barnsley here, Barnsley. So many times. This guy was I think at one point, he held a record for number of relegations from the Premier League because he was at Bradford as well. Think he was somewhere else as well. Neil Redfern. [00:50:08] Speaker C: Neil Redfern. [00:50:09] Speaker A: I wouldn't have got that. Wouldn't have got that one if he did at home. Congratulations. And your last one? Cardiff city. This is right. I've double checked this. Frasier Campbell only scored six. Stephen Colcker scored five. Bobby de cordova Reeves scored five. Victor Kamasara scored five. Sol Bamba scored four, but this guy scored seven. [00:50:42] Speaker B: I wouldn't even give us a clue. [00:50:44] Speaker A: I'm just about to try and give you a clue currently. Let's see where he's oh, goodness me. He was playing most recently last season. Signed a contract till the end of the season at a club where one of our teams supports them. His career has taken him to such illustrious places over the last crawley Town there, isn't it? Crawley town. MacArthur FC Western Sydney Warriors. elsand Zhangnam. He's also been to Vancouver. White caps reading Crystal Palace, Queens Park rangers much? Jordan much is your correct answer. [00:51:25] Speaker B: He's a watford as well. [00:51:27] Speaker C: Much. [00:51:28] Speaker B: Great player, Watford. [00:51:29] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. 23 games, five goals, according to everybody's favorite online search engine. Ryan, congratulations. [00:51:37] Speaker B: Thank you for white caps. Gave that away. I don't know why, but all I. [00:51:42] Speaker A: Would do at that moment is Peter Beardsley. Peter Beardsley, surely congratulations at home. If you got those ones right. Let us know how you got on by sending us in an email at editors at the Analyst.com, or, of course, letting us know how you did across our social media channels. We are at Opta Analyst. Across all your favorites. Facebook, X, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, the works. Ryan, thanks for joining me today. Good breakdown of the Manchester Derby and also a successful go on the Pauline Quirk quiz. [00:52:09] Speaker B: Yep. Thank you very much for having me. That was a good quiz. Very good quiz. [00:52:13] Speaker A: Very good quiz. Matt, you're a disgrace. Basically, I've got a lower win ratio. [00:52:19] Speaker C: Than you in the quiz, which is not good. [00:52:22] Speaker A: You know, like when Alan Pardgy took over at Charlton and it all went wrong? He's kind of got those vibes, dare. [00:52:29] Speaker C: I say, Allardy's coming in at Leeds last season. [00:52:33] Speaker A: What's your bonus today? How many pints of wine will you be necking tonight? Thanks very much, Matt. Thanks, everybody, as ever, for listening. Really do appreciate you all. Thanks for holding on with us for our day delay. We'll be back after the next round of Premier League fixtures. We'll catch you all soon. [00:52:47] Speaker C: Take care.
